The day after the show, in the Faena Forum, some 190 students will attend a masterclass by Bruno Pavlovsky, President of CHANEL’s Fashion activities and President of CHANEL SAS, in the presence of Pharrell Williams and Caroline de Maigret. This discussion will be moderated by Tyler Brûlé, Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of Monocle magazine.Unveiled for the first time at the Monte-Carlo Beach Hotel last May, the collection made a stopover on the beach of the Faena Hotel, whose theatrical backdrop was designed by director Baz Luhrmann and costume designer Catherine Martin.

Gucci’s connection to London runs deep, as the brand’s history is linked to founder Guccio Gucci, who in 1897 was a luggage porter and lift boy at London hotel The Savoy. Observing the guests’ luggage, he was inspired to start creating his own line of luxury suitcases and bags, founding his namesake house in Florence in 1921 and setting up the first Gucci store in the Italian city’s Via della Vigna Nuova. The iconic Monte Carlo Casino enjoyed a Chanel cameo too, in the form of a miniature slot-machine bag, while other fun, summery references included bags resembling beach balls, tennis racquets, poker chips and an ice box (albeit in signature Chanel quilted leather – far more stylish). Footwear, on the other hand, was inspired by the Monte-Carlo ballet dancers' pointe shoes and reflected in black satin slippers adorned with thin strass buckles.
As for the set itself, Chanel sent models down a runway set up like a football field, with guests seated on risers and branded scoreboards zooming in on various attendees in the bleachers on either end. It wouldn’t be Hollywood without an A-list guest list, which included Paris Hilton, naturally, wearing top-to-toe pink, and Kristen Stewart, her signature style, a complete contrast to Hilton’s, showcased through an oversized monochromatic tweed suit and white T-shirt. Guests arrived at the iconic film studio, Paramount Pictures, to find, in true Chanel fashion — the French house is synonymous with incredible, intricate and extravagant show staging — a mini carnival taking place. Granted not much has changed stylistically in Los Angeles since Perry’s tribute, in fact, Margot Robbie wore almost wore exactly that — denim jeans and a bikini top — to Chanel’s show in Los Angeles on Tuesday night (albeit the chicest possible iteration). But, it appears what is changing is the perception, and the industry taking the beach-laden lifestyle’s style sensibility seriously. In alignment with Gucci’s longstanding commitment to champion culturally significant locations and their communities, the house will support the “Electric Dreams” exhibition at Tate Modern, which opens this fall, in addition to a three-year partnership fostering the museum’s work with young creatives.

After performing their signature tunes, including Everybody Dance, I Want Your Love, Le Freak and Good Times, the band was joined on stage by Pharrell Williams for the track Get Lucky. While there were still plenty of Chanel’s signature tweed jackets and gauzy gowns, they were nestled among modern streetwear staples like oversized sweatshirts, crop tops, and comfy matching sets.

A typical movie set lot was transformed into a massive roller rink, replete with double Cs and a scoreboard that had a running list of the models, almost announcing them like players on a starting lineup.
Looming over the event, a large screen displayed an avant-garde, hypnotic Harmony Korine-esque film in which models exercised between monochromatic shots of palm trees and an open sky. Set within the iconic Monte-Carlo Beach Hotel, Chanel's Cruise 2023 show saw the full length of the beach and pier turned into a runway, with some 400 stars, fashion insiders and friends of the brand peppering the coastline on white sun loungers and in chic cabanas.
